The On-Demand Flow Sensor is used to provide real-time feedback to the On-Demand Control Panel.
Since the hot water recalculating system is a closed, pressurized loop, when a faucet is turned on,
a low pressure area is created and the water immediately begins to move in the direction of the low
pressure area.
As the water exits the loop at the low pressure area (i.e., the open faucet), cold water from the
providing utility makes up the loss. This water enters the system through the cold water make-up
line and goes immediately into the storage tank.

Any movement in the water in the cold water make-up line indicates a demand for hot water. In
order to detect the smallest of flows we developed the On-Demand Flow Sensor.
The Flow Sensor has a small turbine that turns as water passes through it. One spot on the
turbine is magnetized and activates a reed switch which sends a pulse through a low voltage
wire to the Control Panel.
Approximately 5 to 8 gpm can pass through the Flow Sensor depending on the building water
pressure. The turbine spins up to 200 times per second and 1,200 times per gallon of water.
The technology used to read the Flow Sensor is the same technology used in a flip phone or
automobile air bags. It is an extremely reliable and accurate technology.
The Flow Sensor is connected to the Control Panel via 22-gauge low-voltage wire (thermostat
wire is most often used). The Flow Sensor can be installed up to 300 feet from the control
panel but is normally less than 15 feet away.
The Flow Sensor cartridge which holds the turbine can get clogged on occasion by pieces of
debris in the system. In order to protect the Flow Sensor a wye screen is installed upstream
of the Flow Sensor. The wye screen will need to be flushed at least once per year depending
on the amount and size of debris in the local water and the age of the pipes.
The Flow Sensor body is made form Sebiloy low lead content brass, the turbine cartridge and
the reed switch housing are made form Delron plastic and the turbine is made from a hi-tech
ceramic called neodymium and rotates on a stainless steel pin.
